Biography
Originating from Olive Branch, Mississippi, Kevin McKenzie’s musical prowess was first revealed at a young age by his piano instructor. He went on to join choir while attending SBEC, a college preparatory school in Southaven, Mississippi. While also participating in the school’s band, he directed the brass choir, as well as, won numerous best solo awards. He played in several honor bands including University of Mississippi, Delta State, Desoto, Mississippi State, University of Memphis, and the All-State Mississippi Honor Band. In 2008 and 2009, Mr. McKenzie competed in the WGI World Championships of Percussion on marimba and drum set, where the ensemble placed 6th against groups from all over the world. In addition, he is a charter member of the Music City Drum & Bugle Corps, where he served as Euphonium Section Leader and a featured soloist for three years. He now marches with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, based out of Rockford, Illinois, on Lead Euphonium.
Kevin is currently working towards his bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Composition at the University of Memphis. He carries on in his success by arranging, composing, performing, and working as an music educator across the United States. Kevin is a certified Breathing Gym Educator and is an instructor for the Summer Brass Bash summer clinic, where he still serves as the arranger/composer for the organization. Mr. McKenzie is also a Private Instructor for students all through out the greater Memphis area. He currently works with the SBEC Middle School Band, High School Band, Percussion Ensemble, the Houston High School Indoor Drumline, and is on Staff at the Briarcrest Conservatory of Music teaching Brass. Passing up no opportunity, Kevin is the composer for the popular warm-up book “The Hollywood Warm Up.” He has served as Vice President of the Daniel Perantoni Chapter of the Tuba/Euphonium Studio at the University of Memphis and is currently serving as President of the organization, as well as, Vice President of Musiacal Entrepreneurs. He recently competed in the University of Memphis Concerto Competition where he was recognized for his distinguishing performance. Kevin is currently published with Ensemble Essentials and continues to excel in his musical career in all areas with his various achievements.
